The day I boarded a plane from Cheongju International Airport after a long time!
On my way to Jeju Island, I went to Cheongju using Aero K, which recently started operating. It's more convenient to return from Jeju to Gimpo instead of Cheongju, so I used public transportation to get to Cheongju International Airport.
First, there are mainly two ways to get to Cheongju International Airport from Seoul: by bus or by train.
- For buses, some buses from the Central City Terminal to Bukcheongju go through Cheongju International Airport,
- For trains, you can take the KTX from Seoul/Yongsan Station, transfer to the Chungbuk Line at Osong Station, and go to Cheongju Airport Station, or get off at Osong Station and take a seat/city bus to the airport.
After booking my flight from Cheongju Airport, I first looked into taking the train to Cheongju Airport, but the Chungbuk Line train schedule didn't work out, so I ended up taking a bus. I didn't have much luggage, so I initially considered the train, but if you have a suitcase etc., a bus that drops you off in front of the passenger terminal would be more convenient.
Anyway, it was also a long time since I last took a bus from Central City, and I was surprised to see how much brighter it had become.
It was nice to be able to check the weather information for the destination on the large displays installed at each boarding gate.
Note: It takes about 5-7 minutes to walk from Cheongju Airport Station to the Cheongju International Airport passenger terminal; there is a slight incline.
Having arrived at the terminal with plenty of time, I went to gate 11, where the buses to Cheongju and Bukcheongju depart.
When I arrived, a bus to Cheongju Passenger Terminal (Gakyeong-dong) was boarding, and shortly after, boarding began for the Bukcheongju Bus Terminal bus that I was taking.
While waiting for the bus in front of the boarding gate, I overheard the drivers talking. There was mention of Cheongju Airport, and one driver's expression turned sour, making me feel a little uneasy.
The bus to Bukcheongju Bus Terminal via Cheongju Airport departed Central City on time with about 10 passengers.
Soon after leaving the terminal, we entered the Gyeongbu Expressway, but the driver, wearing an exemplary driver's uniform, drove quite aggressively, making for an uncomfortable ride.
Furthermore, after exiting the expressway, the aggressive driving continued on regular roads, with the bus using the right lane (3 lanes) to overtake passenger cars. The driving felt hurried, as if he was being chased, making me question if taking the bus was a good idea.
1 hour and 25 minutes after departing Seoul, the bus arrived at Cheongju International Airport, dropped me off, and continued on to Bukcheongju Bus Terminal.
Getting off the bus at Cheongju Airport, I understood why the driver had seemed unhappy earlier. I was the only passenger to get off at the airport; if it hadn't been me, the bus could have gone straight to Bukcheongju without stopping.
Because of this, I think he ignored my goodbye, quickly closed the doors, and departed.
I wondered how someone who drives so recklessly and lacks a sense of service became an exemplary driver. I decided that next time I come to Cheongju Airport, unless I have luggage, I should avoid using Saeseoul Express.
For reference, after my trip, I found out that the B3 bus from Osong Station to Cheongju Airport does not go through Cheongju city. Next time, even if the Chungbuk Line schedule doesn't work out, I think I'll go to Osong Station! :)
