Jongno, where the history of Joseon is layered. As you wander through Jongno, you'll find wonderful spaces that we unknowingly pass by without notice.
The cafe I'll introduce today is Cafe Idorim Blot x Bake Seochon Main Branch, located on the site of the birthplace of King Sejong the Great of Joseon, where you can time-travel through a part of his life. It's a Seochon cafe.
As you walk up the main road from Gyeongbokgung Station, you'll find the entrance to the Seochon Cafe Idorim Blot Coffee x Seochon Bake Main Branch. The first thing that catches your eye is the enormous rock mountain covered in moss.
This area, known as the birthplace of King Sejong the Great, is said to be a geomantic treasure where several kings were born. Geomantically, this area is considered a prime location, with Inwangsan and Bukaksan mountains in the background, and the Suseongdong valley stream flowing between them, connecting to Cheonggyecheon stream, creating a perfect "back mountain and water in front" landscape.
After admiring the majestic rock mountain on the first floor, we ordered drinks and coffee at the counter next to it.
Having heard it was a coffee and bakery hotspot, we ordered Gyeongbokgung (Palace) roast coffee and the cafe's signature menu item, the Mureungdowon Kouign Amann.
The second floor has an open structure where you can freely enjoy your coffee. There are frame-like windows on the walls, allowing you to admire the streets of Seochon.
On one side of the second floor, you can see an installation of circular structures arranged in a straight line. This space is designed to make you feel as if you are being sucked into another dimension, a time loop, and is said to represent the birth and life of King Sejong the Great.
As you pass each of the repeating circular structures, you can feel the flow of time changing from spring, summer, autumn, to winter.
This is the rooftop space on the third floor. Looking at the outside of the rooftop, there's another distinctive space: a rooftop garden that soothes the mind, a pond that reflects everything like a mirror, and a small door to the right, a small door you have to bow your head to enter.
Going up, an unexpected scenery unfolds. The majestic view of Bukaksan Mountain fills my eyes, a view I often looked at whenever my heart was troubled.
We came up to the third-floor rooftop with our ordered drinks.
The Mureungdowon Kouign Amann, with its soft bread coated in sweet sugar, gives you the feeling of eating a sweet traditional Korean confectionery (yakgwa). It was even more delicious when eaten with the fragrant coffee.
