It is said that ‘Seoryeong’, a Pyongyang naengmyeon restaurant newly started by the owner who used to run Jangwon Makguksu in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do, means ‘peak in the west’.
And I heard that Seoryeong has moved to Namdaemun, Seoul, and that the Lotte World Mall branch, a branch of Seoryeong, has recently opened!
I visited with Korean friends on Saturday!!
The main branch of Seoryeong (Namdaemun) has been listed in many famous places, such as the Blue Ribbon Survey and Michelin Bib Gourmand, and it was also featured in Seong Si-kyung's Muk-eul-ten-de. I was curious whether it was a restaurant worthy of its fame.
The Naver Place and blog reviews of Seoryeong, located on the 6th floor of Jamsil Lotte World Mall, indicated that the break time was from 3 to 5 p.m.
As of my visit on April 26th, 2025 (Saturday), there was no break time... Why is the information different..?! I visited a little after 4 p.m. and was able to enter immediately without waiting. But around 5 p.m. or so when I was leaving...? The hall was full and there was a wait! Please keep this in mind when you visit...
Jamsil restaurant Pyongyang naengmyeon restaurant Seoryeong, you could look at the kiosk menu at the entrance, and it was convenient because you could also order from the kiosk at the table.
The tables and chairs were heavy, and the utensils felt luxurious and clean, which I really liked.
I also liked that I could drink warm buckwheat tea. It might be a bit hot in the summer..
The basic side dishes came out like this. Seasoned radish with a mild version, soy sauce to dip the dumplings in, and a variety of options such as ssamjang, salted shrimp, chili peppers, soy sauce, and garlic, which were served to accompany the pork belly.
Finally, I tasted Seoryeong Sunmyeon. The taste of the savory buckwheat noodles was good, and the broth was saltier than I expected. (Based on Pyongyang naengmyeon!) It was a flavor that even beginners of Pyongyang naengmyeon could enjoy.
It is different from ordinary naengmyeon to the point where Japanese people ask if it is naengmyeon after eating it.
And what was unique was that the meat was served submerged in the noodles. I thought they served it that way to maintain the moisture of the meat. I didn't have high expectations for the meat in Seoryeong Sunmyeon, but the meat tasted really good...? It breaks apart along the grain and is savory and delicious..
Bibim Sunmyeon was also delicious.. The bibimjang tasted more savory than sour. Those who like savory flavors will enjoy it so much... It wasn't spicy either!
A flavor that even those who don't eat spicy food will like! I should have eaten it with my mom who visited last month ㅜ
If Bibim Sunmyeon is this savory, I wonder what the perilla oil Sunmyeon would be like. I should try the perilla oil Sunmyeon next time..
This is delicious..!
And, even though I didn't have any expectations, the Seoryeong Naengsuban, which I liked the most, Why is this so delicious..??? What is this...! The rice is very firm and the cold broth is so refreshing and delicious... Personally, Naengsuban is more my style than Sunmyeon.
The dumplings, Seoryeong dumplings, were just ordinary! I expected too much based on how they looked, but they tasted rather average.... Hmm
And it was as delicious as I expected, very tender and savory, and the yukjeot and radish kimchi that came with it were also sweet and savory and went well together.
Overall, the menus of Seoryeong, a Pyongyang naengmyeon restaurant in Jamsil, had a base of sweetness and savory flavors. Personally, it was a good experience. I think I'll visit again next time I go to Jamsil Lotte World Mall!
There are so many things for Japanese people to do when they come to Jamsil!
